Recycled Sculpture Show 2008 Opens at ZSL London Zoo!
The Recycled Sculpture Show 2008 exhibition was launched simultaneously with Love London at ZSL London Zoo on May 29th.
It’s aim is to connect with people through the innovative & creative transformation of waste.
An eclectic mix of sculptures reflect themes of sustainability and conservation. There’s 'Atlantis' by Heather Jansch, a stunningly realistic horse made from locally gathered driftwood and Ptolemy’s menacing 8ft Great White hubcap shark.
The iconic Penguin Pool by Lubetkin currently has no real penguins, infiltrated instead by Lawrie Simonson's swarm of bugs fashioned from skip finds and breaker’s bits.
Recycled glass penguins created by Anthony Wilson wander tropical landscapes and polar bears by Tone Holmen highlights impacts of global warming and the menace of waste plastic bags.
Whilst the threatening TYRErannosaurus looms, made by Chris Pilmore, the show is a wonderful display of 20+ talented artists from across the UK, Canada, Norway and Serbia.
Sustainability Manager at ZSL London Zoo, Sophie Townsend said:
"The sculptures really provoke debate about human waste and its effect on the natural world. There is no better setting for this than surrounded by some of the most endangered creatures on Earth – many of which are close to extinction because of man’s insatiable lust for fresh resources."
This thought provoking and inspiring exhibition continues until 5th September.
